Amazon.com Product Description:
Save money on monthly gym fees and get yourself in shape with the compact, comfortable Schwinn 230 recumbent exercise bike. The 230 boasts many of the high-quality features of the Schwinn 213, but adds several extras, including a nicer, easier-to-read instrument panel with a three-position angle adjustment, a slightly lower pedal height that produces a more comfortable riding position, and an easy step-through frame. And that doesn’t even account for all the essentials, which range from 16 resistance levels to handlebars with an integrated heart rate monitor built into the grip.

The handiest feature, however, is unquestionably the anatomically designed recumbent seat, which not only offers a dual-position lumbar support for added comfort, but also a micro-adjustable fore/aft seat slider that accommodate a variety of body types and sizes. Other details include six preset programs (calorie goal, BMI measurement, recovery test, results mode, quick start, and manual mode), 10 profile courses, and transport wheels that both protect your floors and make the bike easy to store.

Track your time, interval time, RPM, watts, distance, pulse, speed, calories, and resistance on the 230’s LCD console.

About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means “lying down.” Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Arrived in good condition by MA
After reading several reviews about the shipping and computer issues with this bike, I was hesitant to order. However, based on past experience with Amazon, I decided to proceed. CEVA was the shipper and the box did arrive partially open (the local shipper to the final destination was Eagle Logistics). The straps used to hold the box together had slid to one end. This allowed the opposite end to partially open and tear. Inside, the bike was packed in styrofoam so it was undamaged despite the problems with the outer packaging. Assembly was straightforward and the computer hook-up went well and works with no issues. Note: once you pull the computer cables up through the handlebar column, it is difficult to push it back down in order to connect the display pad to the handlebar column. If we had not pulled through quite as much spare cable, this part of the assembly would have gone smoother.

This is a wonderful design that works very quietly and extremely smoothly. It is well constructed, easy to move around, and very comfortable to sit in. The price is reasonable for the features offered.

I would highly recommend it.

The best recumbent bike out there. by Scott Owens
Short version:

PROS: Enough resistance for EVERYONE (you won’t out grow this bike!), nice mix of programs plus a manual feature, intuitive and easy to use controls, comfortable seat (and I’m pretty wide)

CONS: Does not pick up signal from wireless heart rate monitors :(

Long Version:

I am a 25 year old grad student who used to be in good shape but noticed myself becoming increasingly softer and wider as I spend more and more time in front of a computer for my studies. I had been jumping rope after I got home, but ended up injuring my Achilles tendon and noticed pain in my knees due to the impact. I switched to riding my bike around the neighborhood, but became too saddle sore to ride and I couldn’t ride when it was cold/hot/rainy/early/late/etc. So, I looked at ellipticals and recumbent bikes so I could build a reliable exercise regimen which would give me the endurance/strength benefits I needed without the wear and tear on my body or concern for weather.

I settled on this because ellipticals of similar quality were far more expensive. I have had the bike for 3 months now and am VERY pleased with it. I work out 3 or 4 times a week, normally using the strength interval training program. I currently work out with the max resistance only about half of that the bike is capable. Any higher and I can’t maintain the 60+ rpms that provide optimal heart workout. This might sound like the bike doesn’t have enough resistance, but I’m a big guy (250 lbs) and I backpack and hike regularly. I have VERY strong legs and can’t use the bike set above half it’s max resistance. That tells me that the bike has PLENTY enough resistance.

The bike operates flawlessly. The mag resistance and weighted flywheel give smooth, even, and silent resistance. I watch TV while I ride and I don’t have to turn the TV up.

I’m 6 ft tall and someone a few inches than me could fit on this bike, similarly, someone much shorter could slide the seat forward and use it w/o problems.

My ONLY complaint with this bike, is it isn’t compatible with my heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor on the grips is ok, but I take my hands off to wipe sweat or change the tv channel and it goes to zero. Also, it takes some time to get back up to an accurate reading (30 seconds), so it’s not as accurate a workout using the grip heart monitor. I don’t understand why Schwinn didn’t give it the option of receiving wireless HRM signals. If they did, this would be the PERFECT recumbent bike. As it is, I still think this is the best one out there!

BEWARE by Arnold H. Wax
I HAVE ALREADY RETURNED THIS PRODUCT. AMAZON HAS CREDITED MY ACCOUNT. THE BIKE WHICH REQUIRED ALMOST TWO HOURS TO ASSEMBLE WAS DEFECTIVE. IT CLANGED IN THE LEFT FOOT 10 O CLOCK POSITION. EVERYTHING I READ IMPLIED THAT IT IS A DEFAULT OF THE MANUFACTURER–CHINA. IT IS ONLY A SCHWINN BY NAME AND NOT OF THE QUALITY OF MANY YEARS AGO.
